Legal considerations: The 'why' and the 'what'

Before you begin to consider the specifics of possible legal options to protect the interests and wellbeing of your FASD individual, it is important you consider and be clear on your answer to these three questions:

  1. Why are you considering legal options?
  2. What do you want to achieve for your FASD individual through any available legal options?
  3. What effect will removing or replacing the responsibility for some of your FASD person’s legal rights have on them - now and across the lifespan?

Write your answers down in a planning notebook because you will want to refer back to these for planning and review purposes if you decide that pursuing legal protection is the right thing to do for your FASD person – whether you do this as they move from adolescence to adulthood, or at some later stage of their life.
