'State of Caring Survey 2025-26'

FASD-CAN’s primary kaupapa is supporting individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and those who care for them. We align closely with Carers NZ and we are members of the NZ Carer’s Alliance.

The latest Carers NZ survey, completed by 1700 carers, focused on health, employment and finances. Many of our members completed it, and the ‘State of Caring Survey Overview 2025-26’ is now available – this is in infographic format, with the formal report being available later this year.

A few of the statistics gained:

  • 87% of carers are women
  • 78% receive no funding as carers
  • one in three said they had cut back on food or heating to make ends meet
  • over a third were over 65
  • over a third had been injured while caring
  • 80% said they were lonely.

The statistics shown in these graphics are clearly unacceptable, but sadly they are unsurprising to us. Carers NZ have thanked participants in the survey, saying: “Your feedback will enable us to be more focused in our work and communicate to decision makers what really matters to you. Knowing the issues carers face couldn’t come at a more important time. You have provided important new data to reflect priorities and realities for our country’s family carers.”

We fully tautoko / support Carer’s NZ ongoing advocacy for carers in Aotearoa and continue to stand beside them in their mahi.
