Social workers and support workers in Aotearoa NZ are key to improving the lives of individuals with FASD and their whānau / families.
FASD-CAN run quarterly webinars for the support sector featuring special-interest presentations from FASD-informed experts. The aim is for our support professionals to learn more about this specific neurodisability and gain strategies to help them (and their whānau / families) to live their best lives.
The FASD LANSAS group presents a specialist webinar online once a quarter.
Upcoming webinar
Choice Theory: Empowering Connections to Support Tamariki with FASD
Tuesday May 12, 4pm-5pm
‘Choice Theory’, developed by Dr William Glasser, is a framework designed to shift our perspective about what drives human behaviour from external control to internal empowerment. It moves us away from traditional 'reward and punishment' models that often fail due to the neurological complexities of FASD, and instead focuses on building secure, need-satisfying relationships.
We will explore the Five Basic Needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun – and learn how to help children navigate their 'Quality World' through the lens of Total Behaviour.
By understanding that all behaviour is an attempt to meet a need, you will gain practical tools to de-escalate conflict, foster emotional regulation, and create a supportive environment where children can truly thrive.
