Petition: for alcohol outlets to show warning signs for pregnant women

FASD-CAN member Christopher Ingram has launched this formal petition – and we think it's a great idea.

Petition request

That the House of Representatives require holders of licensed premises to display warning signs at their entrances and within to alert pregnant women of their risk of their baby being born with FASD if they drink alcohol.

Petition reason

Alcohol consumption when pregnant can cause lifelong harm to unborn babies called FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder). NZ's Ministry of Health estimates 1800-3000 FASD babies are born each year. In April 2024 the Minister of Health promised to increase awareness and decrease incidence of FASD. I believe that alerting pregnant women, their partners and supporters of this risk to their babies, at point of entry and inside liquor outlets, could reduce, at low cost, the number of babies born every day with FASD.
