Teens to Adults – Online Connection Group

Moving from being a teen to an adult is rarely easy, but for a rangatahi with FASD – and for their whānau / families – it can be really hard. Teens with FASD have some added stressors, for example dysmaturity (looking and seeming their age, but being functionally younger); executive and adaptive functioning challenges, and being overly trusting or keen to be liked.

The good news is, you're not alone in working through this: after a recent workshop about our website resource, 'Teens and Beyond', we realised that parents, caregivers, grandparents and whānau want more support through these tricky years.

We have set up a new monthly connection group to address this!

• Each monthly session will happen on the third Thursday of each month, at 7.30pm-8.30pm.

• Each monthly online session will follow the same outline:

  • 15 minutes: welcome, introductions, wins since last month, and a quick check-in
  • 30 minutes: one focused topic with practical strategies, examples, and discussion (see below for topics)
  • 15 minutes: questions and sharing.

Please sign up to get your Zoom link – this link will not change and you'll be reminded when each session is coming up.

Facilitator

Teesh Dowie-Lewis, FASD-CAN Kaiwhakatere / Navigator in the Waikato region, has had enormous experience raising teenagers; she has been a foster mum to over 60 tamariki and rangatahi. In 2024, Teesh received a prestigious Excellence in Foster Care award from Caring Families Aotearoa (CFA), who continue to recognise and celebrate her outstanding mahi and dedication to whānau. There's nothing Teesh hasn't seen or heard!
