Tītoki 7: Weekend Camp Waikanae

Background

FASD-CAN supports a group of rangatahi (16+) and adults living with FASD via our Tītoki programme. We've held six weekend camps hosting this ever-increasing group to date.

Anyone with FASD (or possible/probable FASD) can join us for these weekends, although places are limited.

The weekends are a mix of rangatahi and adults learning about FASD and understanding how their own brains work, plus lots of fun stuff: e.g. kayaking, climbing, swimming in the pool, walks – and usually a bonfire with marshmallows!

Whanaungatanga / connection and friendship is always a priority, and it’s through this that our young people with FASD are gaining mutual āwhi / support, encouragement and an increased sense of mana. Other priorities include opportunities to build self-confidence and develop self-expression and kaiārahi / leadership skills.

Tītoki 7: November 2026

Dates / times: Friday 20 November 2026 from 3pm – Sunday 22 November, ends  1.30pm

Venue: El Rancho Conference Centre, Waikanae.

Click here to find out more about the venue on the Kapiti Coast (one hour north of Wellington).

Please note: all Tītoki events are alcohol, illegal drug and smoke-free (there will be a designated area to vape).

Fees

The camp is funded for people with FASD to attend, along with a parent, a whānau member or caregiver. If you have a professional support person who can come with you instead, please share our sponsorship letter with them, so their organisation can get on board and support Tītoki – and you!

Download sponsorship letter.

Please note: We welcome any donation / koha towards the costs of running Tītoki camps.

Facilitation and Engagement

Anna Gundesen is the project lead for Tītoki, and Kelly Archer is our Tītoki Youth Development Navigator.

Our initial kaiārahi / group leaders with FASD were Byron Jones, Teowai Te Moana Clayton and Noah Langdon-Reidy, however this is a dynamic space and we encourage mana-enhancing engagement from emerging leaders.

Any people with FASD who register are invited to be included in developing ideas for the camp and can show leadership and guidance to those less confident. We provide kaiāwhina (usually trained youth workers and support workers) to assist in the running of the camp.

How to register your interest

Click here to fill in your expression of interest for attending.

Spaces are limited and we will have to allocate these as we receive them.

Once you have filled this in and emailed it, our administrator Nikita will get in touch with you soon to confirm your attendance and arrange accommodation, flights or petrol vouchers for those driving.

• We will provide an outline of the programme for the weekend closer to November.

• Please rest assured there will be flexibility to respond to the needs of the group as they unfold.

For any questions or further information please email  Nikita at [email protected]

Our Tikanga and Ways of Being

• We are a diverse, multi-cultural group of individuals with brain differences resulting from pre-natal alcohol exposure.

• We want to create opportunities to plant our feet firmly with pride, confidence and certainty.

• We stand together with courage.

• We grow our mana, our connections and our leadership skills so our whānau and communities can hear our voices and improve their knowledge and understanding of FASD. We want our voices heard to bring about change.

Our Whakataukī

Hei te tau tītoki   |  When the tītoki blooms, it does so in its own time.

Like the tītoki tree, our tamariki, rangatahi and adults with FASD bloom in their own time. Every kernel holds great potential and given time, that potential reveals itself.
